End-of-year announcements for 2013/4

2013 has been an eventful year for our club: the sadness of the passing of our friends Sensei Gilbert Maillot and Sensei Ettiennne Venter and the the happiness of finally having our own dedicated Dojo space. We also enjoyed seeing Sensei Veso again, who visited us from Belgrade after a long absence.

Aikido classes will be stopping for the year on Thursday 19th of December and the dojo will reopen on 6th of January. For those who feel they will become stiff or bored of overindulging during the break, flexibility classes will be available in the usual timeslots – please let Niki or Sensei Darko know if you would like to attend.

If you are still in town, we will be having our year-end party on Saturday 21st December from 14:00 until late at Sensei David’s new house. Partners are welcome and there is a swimming pool. There will be parking available on the street. Please confirm attendance with Sensei Darko.

  • Address: 5 Dove street, Ferndale, Randburg.
  • Bring whatever you’re drinking and a plate of food

Joburg Aikido wishes all our students and friends a safe, happy holiday and look forward to meeting again in 2014

Sensei Ettienne Venter has passed away suddenly

It was with deep shock that we learned of the sudden passing of Sensei Ettienne Venter – a longtime stalwart of the Cape Aikido Community

He had a mild heart attack on the morning of 16 December 2013 , followed by a major one 2hours later. Whilst he had been battling somewhat with his health in recent years, it did seem that he had turned a corner for the better.

Sensei Etienne took over the Cape Town dojo after the passing of Jos Niehaus and more recently concentrated on  teaching at the Stellenbosch Sakura dojo.

Our deepest condolences to his family and friends.
